At 5’10” and 368 lbs, I would have never thought about riding a bike. Now I’m riding 40, 60, and 100mile rides and loving the outdoors!

I was not always overweight. When I was in my 30’s I quit a smoking habit and gained about 40 pounds, and was never able to lose the extra weight. In fact, my weight slowly crept upward over the years. Later, I returned to school, working full time, attending law school full time and eating a steady diet of junk food. My weight skyrocketed and I began taking medications for hypertension, high cholesterol and acid reflux. My weight continued to climb in spite of my mostly ineffective efforts to control my diet. I began having problems with my back, knees and feet due to my overweight condition.

As a young man, I learned to fly airplanes, earning a private pilot license and an instrument rating. I even had some aerobatic flight training in a Great Lakes Biplane. I owned two different airplanes and enjoyed flying around the country and taking local pleasure flights. For me, flying was truly one of the great joys of life. After gaining a lot of weight, I found I had eaten my way out of the cockpit. I was just physically too large to get into most small aircraft. In fact, flying on an airliner had become a miserable experience.

A few years ago I began to explore surgical weight loss options. I after doing extensive research and talking at length with my primary care physician, I opted for gastric bypass surgery. I selected Dr. David Dyslin as my surgeon. On May 21, 2007 I had my surgery at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital.

I cannot say enough about the kind, compassionate and professional care I received through the entire process from Dr. Dyslin, his staff and the staff at Texas Health Arlington Memorial. I was treated with dignity, respect and compassion by each and every person involved in my surgery from the education and approval process, pre-op, the day of surgery and my care afterwards.

The result? I have lost 110 pounds, am off of all my prescription medications, taking only vitamin supplements. My blood pressure and cholesterol levels are well within normal ranges without any medication, and I no longer have acid reflux.

I am now able to do lots of activities that my overweight condition precluded. I even got back into flying, and recently earned a commercial pilot’s license!

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. David Dyslin, his staff and the staff at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital. My gastric bypass surgery has truly been a life changing experience!

After losing more than 130 lbs, and half my body weight, I’m doing things I never thought possible. I’m going back to school to get my nursing degree, riding amusement park rides, and even recently got married!

Tammy recently asked me how my life has changed since bypass surgery….and that is an exciting thing to answer!! How has it not changed? First, I work out at least 5 days a week. The first time I completed a whole step class I almost fainted!! I started out slow with just walking on the treadmill and riding a bike and have gone to walking 4.2 miles around Grapevine lake a couple of times a week. In March, I completed the Ab Crunch Challenge at my gym which was 3 hours of Cardio and Ab Exercises. I started it and never thought I would finish! It was amazing.

The other thing that has changed is my quality of life. I sleep so much better and have more energy than you can imagine. I am always looking for something else to do as I have so much energy!! I recently flew on an airplane and couldn’t believe the difference. The seats were small, as it was a little plane, and I actually fit….no problem. Shopping is also much more fun! It is so neat to walk in a regular size section of a store and just pick out a shirt or pants….without trying them on! I never could have done that at size 28….Most stores didn’t carry it. I have gone from size 28 to 10 and 4X to M and L….It is so hard to believe!

If you ever question whether you should do this surgery or if it is right for you…DO IT!! It is scary at first and hard, but it is worth it. I will never regret it and thank God every day for Tammy, Dr. Dyslin and Dr. Lyons. They are wonderful people and care!

Now that I’ve lost almost exactly 100 lbs I’m just a happier person. I’m a better mom to my kids, I’m not embarrassed to go to their school events, I’m playing volleyball and other sports, and am actually looking forward to vacation!
